Guidelines for accepting dogs into rescue:

1. Only accepts and places dogs that are considered to be ambassadors for the breed and display sound temperament with regard to interactions with people.

2. All dogs being considered for rescue will receive a preliminary behavior evaluation by a member of The Proper Pit Bull or partner organization. If arrangements cannot be made for evaluation, the dog will not be accepted into rescue.

3. All resources required for appropriate care of the dog will be arranged prior to committing to rescue. This includes an approved foster home or appropriate housing and funds for veterinary care.

4. All dogs accepted into rescue will require signed documentation declaring a transfer of ownership to The Proper Pit Bull unless an owner cannot be located and signature obtained.

5. Volunteers will be prohibited from accepting dogs into rescue on behalf of The Proper Pit Bull without prior approval from the board of directors.


Guidelines for care of dogs accepted into rescue:

1. All dogs will be provided with approved housing, veterinary care, enrichment, and training.

2. All dogs will be examined by a veterinarian, altered, receive age appropriate vaccinations, be heartworm tested, and implanted with a microchip prior to adoption. Additionally, all dogs 8 years of age and older will be screened for age related health concerns via a senior blood panel that at minimum will contain a complete blood count and blood chemistry.

3. All pregnant females accepted into rescue will be spayed as soon as reasonably possible if the pregnancy is estimated to be 50 days or less in duration. Any female accepted into rescue where the fetal age is suspected to be beyond 50 days will require approval from the board of directors prior to late term spay.

4. When using a foster home a signed foster contract stating that The Proper Pit Bull will maintain legal and financial responsibility for the dog will be required. Additionally, any foster home in violation of the contract stipulations will be required to relinquish control of the dog and will not be eligible for future foster placements.

5. All potential foster homes will require an application process and home check prior to any dog being placed in their care. During time when a foster home is in possession of the dog, consistent communication with representatives of The Proper Pit Bull will be required.

6. Breeding of dogs accepted into rescue is strictly prohibited.

7. All dogs accepted into rescue will not attend public events or enter public spaces until they have received age appropriate vaccinations and are deemed to be free of potentially infectious diseases by a veterinary professional .

8. All dogs accepted into rescue will be socialized in several environments in a well controlled manner. If temperament permits, socialization will also occur with other dogs but may not occur within the first two weeks after being accepted into rescue.

9. Any dog deemed to be unadoptable or with significant health concerns will be humanely euthanized after approval from the board of directors. In instances where a dog is deemed unadoptable due to behavior concerns, a certified professional dog trainer may be consulted for further evaluation and recommendations.

10. All dogs in under the care of The Proper Pit Bull will not be permitted to run at large and must be kept on a leash when outside of the home. Unsupervised dogs will be separated from one another and other animals both inside and outside of the approved housing.

Guidelines for placement of dogs accepted into rescue:

1. Potential adopters will be screened through an application process, interview, home check and reference check.

2. All adopters of dogs under 3 years of age will be educated on true temperament development and will understand that a dog’s true temperament is not known until maturity. The Proper Pit Bull will maintain quarterly contact with adopters until maturity is reached.

3. All adopters of dogs under one year of age will be required to complete approved training classes until the dog reaches one year of age.

4. The adopter of any puppy less than 12 weeks of age will be required to provide documentation of rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian once complete.

5. Orphaned puppies under 8 weeks of age will not be accepted into rescue unless moved directly into a setting that includes at least one healthy, vaccinated and well-adjusted adult role model dog able to provide appropriate dog-pup socialization.

6. All dogs accepted into rescue will not be made available for adoption until after a two week period of adjustment has been reached. The dog will then remain under the care of The Proper Pit Bull for an additional minimum of two weeks. During this period each dog will receive appropriate training and a final behavior assessment prior to being made available for adoption.

7. Adoptions will be considered pending until a two week in home trial period is completed by the potential adopter.

8. All adopters will be required to sign a contract that provides legal grounds for repossession of dogs that are not being cared for in a manner consistent with the adoption agreement or if the adopter is no longer able to care for the dog.

9. All adopters will be required to contact The Proper Pit Bull for training and/or behavior advice should any type of aggression be displayed by the adopted dog.

10. The Proper Pit Bull will be available as a resource to the adoptive home for the life of the dog and will work with the adopter to help remedy any problems that may arise.


General guidelines for professional conduct:

1. The Proper Pit Bull will evaluate and place each dog accepted into rescue as an individual. In addition, each potential adoptive and foster family will be paired with a dog that best suits the unique needs and dynamics of their human and animal family.

2. The Proper Pit Bull will work closely with local animal control and shelter staff to establish good rescue relationships and will offer breed knowledge and support to shelters and other rescue groups where possible.

3. The Proper Pit Bull will act as a community resource for breed education and information and provide materials and public outreach where possible.

4. The Proper Pit Bull will not buy dogs to rescue them. However, an adoption or “pull” fee from a legitimate rescue or shelter is acceptable.

5. Will not label dogs as “bait,” “fighting,” or “abused” animals without substantial evidence confirming the dog’s history.

6. The Proper Pit Bull will not claim a “no kill” status with regard to rescue.
